The EU might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it calls “unjustified” travel bans issued by the US against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson has said.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
Officials from Europe such as Emmanuel Macron charged Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the visa restrictions targeted individuals who have been central to efforts to introduce legislation regulating US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress US perspectives they disagree with,” stated the US secretary of state online. “This government will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”
Broad Criticism From EU Nations
Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials supported the French president in condemning the decision.
The bans were imposed this week against a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as several activists fighting false information, from Germany and the United Kingdom.
An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while EU authorities argue the rules are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
This disagreement risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and European institutions.
